The beginning of the 20th century was a revolutionary period in all forms of art, including theatre. Artists tried to break free from the notions of beautiful and ugly, good and bad, right and wrong, set in stone by the previous centuries. The necessity to find new means of expression gave rise to expressionism, futurism, constructivism etc. Having found success in Europe, these movements also reached Estonia.
One of the theatre innovators in Estonia was Arthur Valdes, a multitalented artist whose life and work has largely remained a mystery for us. Recently, however, some of his notes, that had been lost in archives, were rediscovered – they contained plans for a theatrical experiment that he wished to conduct in Tallinn in 1927. Unfortunately the performance never took place, because business matters forced Valdes to leave Estonia. Now, around a hundred years later, the troupe of Midnight Sun decided to complete Valdes’s theatrical innovation.
