Ten Theatre Take-Offs – a series of productions launched at the Tallinn City Theatre in autumn 2010 – gives young or simply beginning directors the opportunity to stage their first production at a professional theatre. Biloxi Blues, brought on the stage by Sander Pukk, a 3rd year student at the Drama School of Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, is the second production of the take-off series to meet the audience.

Biloxi Blues is the second part of Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical Eugene Trilogy, focusing on the experiences of young Eugene M. Jerome who dreams of becoming a writer. In 1943, Eugene is mobilised to the army and sent to a two-and-a-half-month training course, where he and his companions have to prepare for war under the guidance of an eccentric sergeant. Youth that simply happens to coincide with the time of the Second World War does not differ considerably from youth at any other time. Six lads with a very different background and world view each have their own dreams and fears. Life in the army teaches them a lot not only about the war but also about each other, about themselves and about life.
