Jacob, Oh Jacob
By the Academic Female Choir of the University of Tartu.

“I was once at a concert of a chamber ensemble, sitting in the first rows, just in front of the contrabass player. What this male contrabassist did with his instrument was not just music making with the biggest stringed instrument. He seemed to have a living being in his hands, a woman with whom he communicated, caressing her, making fun, twisting, bending, kneading, spinning, admiring her... It was like a wild dance between a man and a woman. All my attention at the concert was focused on the passionate relationship of the player and the contrabass, although I think the entire ensemble was playing…. At that moment, I would have wanted to take the place of the contrabass."

Jacob, oh Jacob is a story about being a woman – a bittersweet blend consisting of falling mindlessly in love, longing and lullabies, but also of the sobs of a mourning mother and the coffin knocking of a spinster. To make it fair, both women and men have their word – Ester Mägi, Veljo Tormis, Alo Ritsing, etc. And us, of course.
